A YEAR-ROUND AFRO ROOTS FEST MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM!

For the last 22 years Power of Percussion has remained one of our most popular and impactful offerings. 

This drumming/percussion based activity integrates many techniques and qualities, from Call and Response, Fun with Pitch, Volume and Duration, Counting, Clapping as well as Improvisation, Innovation and appropriate risk-taking.

Using a version of the Brazilian Samba as our foundation participants proceed to learn a basic version which is taught to the full group.

After this, the larger group is divided into smaller sub-groups ranging in size from 20 to 40 persons. These smaller groups build on what has been learned and create a unique 60-90 second performance which will be performed once the group rejoins the larger group in plenary and, as part of a grand finale, will perform its creation.

The Power of Percussion activity can be framed around a number of meeting objectives from dealing with Complexity, Understanding Synergy, as an example of Systems Theory, as well as teaching Trust and Interdependence.

We have customized the activity for groups from 60 to 600 over the years and traveled around the US as well as South America and the Caribbean.
