Afro Roots Festival

The 12th Annual Afro Roots World Music festival focuses on celebrating the evolution of African Culture in our community. Noted by many to be Miami’s longest running World Music festival, the event has featured artists from various African countries as well as artists from the Caribbean and the Americas. The festival has also established a satellite kick off event called the Festival of the Drum.

This years Festival of the Drum will feature a variety of acts from Haiti including folkloric roots band Vodou Lakay and a CD release by renowned Haitian artist Jan Sebon and his global super group Kazak International. The night will get kicked off by Nacao Celeiro, a drumming troupe that plays an array of rhythms from the Northern regions of Brazil.

At the Afro Roots Festival, the featured acts will include Delou Fatala, a traditional West African group from Guinea, spearheaded by Master Balifonist Ibrahima Douibate. Also featured are the Nag Champayons whose coined phrase, tropidelic afrogalactic sounds, is catching on with audiences around the world. Headlining this year’s festival will be Grammy nominated Cuban Son group Conjunto Progreso. The group will be celebrating their live music CD that features trumpet virtuoso, Arturo Sandoval. For this show, the group has invited a variety of special guests to perform for this special occasion. Also featured will be World Renowned painter, LEBO, who will be painting live alongside the group. DJ V (Variation) will be spinning music in between the live sets all night long.
